RALEIGH’S AETNA TEAM EARNS ITS FIRST PODIUM
Raleigh’s Aetna Cycling Team is a northeast United States-based professional road racing team. The team races and trains on the Raleigh Militis 3.
After three hours of endurance riding before the race, Aetna Cycling Team members Dave Hoyle and Ryan Serbel returned to the Bethel Spring Series race course to meet with teammates John Harris and Dan Caridi. With temps in the low 50s (finally!) and a clear, sunny sky, the race set off with an initial attack from Dave. As is the nature of the races at Bethel, this move was quickly brought back. With a perfect position, John was able to counter this move and stay away for about 10 laps with another rider. After John scooped up a prime, the move was brought back yet again.
Aetna continued the attacks, with both Dave and Ryan getting good gaps on the field that were again eagerly brought back by the field. With about 10 laps to go, a late move containing a strong Champion Systems rider, local legend Eneas Freyre, and 6-7 other riders got just about 25 yards on the field. Seeing that this was the move that would stick, Ryan maneuvered his way through the top 15 of the field and bridged the gap. The break would organize briefly, then be disrupted by riders skipping pulls, sitting up, or attacking to no avail.
With two laps to go it was clear the break was satisfied with a sprint finish. Greenline Velo / Zipcar rider Sam Rosenholtz jumped just before the final incline. Ryan was able to respond and hold out for a strong 2nd place finish. This was the team’s 1st podium of the year!
