AETNA PUTS TWO RIDERS IN THE TOP 10 IN RHODE ISLAND
While the bike industry fixated its attention on the Sea Otter Classic this weekend (including wins by Raleigh-Clement’s Ben Berden and Caroline Mani in the cyclocross race!), Raleigh’s Aetna Cycling Team traveled to Charlestown, Rhode Island for the Newhouse criterium, a mile-long flat circuit with smooth sweeping corners.
At race start, standard road tactics took over; the peloton watched, reacted, and traded attacks.
But soon Aetna rider Tim Ahearn established the first breakaway that would stick. A handful of minutes later, as the peloton reeled him in, Aetna rider John Harris launched a counter attack bringing with him four other riders in what would amount to the race-winning breakaway.
Back in the peloton, Aetna riders countered any attempts to slowdown the breakaway and ensure John’s escape to the finish.
With the win all but sealed up from the breakaway of four, a second group jumped from the peloton containing Aetna rider David Hoyle.
In the final sprint, John took a fantastic fourth place after driving the breakaway for almost the entire race while David rolled in for eighth. The Aetna team is proving to be skilled tactically and always willing to ride in defense of teammates gunning for the win.
Raleigh is thrilled to support the team and we hope you’re enjoying the race coverage!
