RALEIGH’S 706 PROJECT RACES THE SOUTHEAST REGIONAL SERIES
This weekend the United Healthcare of Georgia p/b The 706 Project sponsored by Raleigh, had team members racing all around the country.
Near the team’s home, a squad comprised of Brendan Cornett, Winston David, Shawn Gravois, and Max Robb took on the SB&T Albany race weekend. This was the first race of the Southeast Regional Series and included a saturday crit and Sunday road race.
The crit started a little slow, so Shawn put in a solo move on the second lap. He was reeled in three laps later. Once the field was all back together, the attacks started. The 706 team had at least one rider represented in every move and about halfway through the race, Shawn got away in a group of six racers.
Winston and Brendan worked to shut down the field to help the break stay away. With three laps to go, Shawn attacked the break, but was caught half a lap later, so he attacked again with two laps to go. This time he was able to hold of the chasing break and take the win ahead of Andy Crater (Finish Strong) and Oleg Tanovitchi (Iron Data).
Sunday’s 91 mile road race began with a strong showing from the Finish Strong team who quickly went to the front and asserted control over the race for the first two of three laps.
After the final King of the Mountain points were taken, the 706 Project started attacking and countering each move. Nothing stuck, so the guys had to gear up for the field sprint. There was a big crash with 1 km to go, but the team all managed to avoid it and Brendan sprinted to a solid 6th place and Winston 8th.
