CAROLINE MANI WINS IN COLORADO
Caroline Mani of the Raleigh-Clement Team took first place at the KMC Classic mountain bike race this weekend and earned the title of Colorado State Cross Country Champion on the way.
Racing in her adopted hometown of Colorado Springs, Mani took the lead on the third of four laps and finished more than a minute ahead of second place Rebecca Gross (Tough Girl Cycling).
Raleigh-Clement teammate Allen Krughoff finished 8th in the Pro Men’s race behind winner Rotem Ishay (Jamis).
The KMC Classic race, also part of the USA Cycling American Mountain Bike Challenge, was held in perfect conditions on the trails of Palmer Park right in downtown Colorado Springs. Despite the destructive Black Forest Fire burning not far from Colorado Springs, there was no sign of smoke or fire at Palmer Park and riders enjoyed an awesome course with a variety of terrain.
With this victory, Mani showed she’s having a very consistent summer and is on the right track in her build up for cyclocross.
“I’ve been a bit sick sick the last two weeks, and it took my legs a while to warm up,” Mani said. “I didn’t have a great start, but I never got too far behind. By the third lap, I started to feel better and I made it to the front. I’m often stronger at the end, and I was descending pretty well too.”
Krughoff said, “This is a good building block for cross season. I live in Boulder, so it’s an easy drive to get a some more racing in the legs. It’s a fun course with punchy climbs, a couple technical sections. Its great training for cross because there aren’t long climbs.”
Mani heads to Missoula, Montana this weekend for the fifth stop on the PRO XCT national calendar. Missoula is also a UCI Category 1 event. Then she travels back to France for a couple races, including the French National Mountain Bike Championships.
Krughoff will next target the Firecracker 50 on July 4 in Breckenridge Colorado. He and the Raleigh-Clement Team will gather at the Midsummer Nights Cyclocross Race at Dealer Camp in Park City, Utah, an event sponsored by Raleigh. They’ll kick off their serious cross season at Cross Vegas in mid-September.
